She had been crushed/
by words dropped on her
with power,
by one who used/
and abused/
them well.
I could tell/
her that my verbs/
and nouns/
and words/
were tender/
and soft /
like butterfly kisses,/
but only time/
could heal her/
and make her well/
once more flow.

I don’t have to act like
I care what you say.
I just do.
I will talk intelligently…
even gently,
because I am
and I am.
You will laugh
because I’m witty,
funny,
clever,
and insanely
humble.
There is no hurry
to lay you down
if I can hold you,
kiss you tenderly,
and listen to you
and converse.
Pity that
I’m not taller.

There is this woman
who has, from day one, intrigued me,
but who said from day two
there was no “we” that could ever be.
Does she now, at last,
let tender, caring words slip?
Let feelings escape her grasp,
just as I prepare for a trip?
The words and thoughts
I’d always waited in vain for,
now are finally brought
as I head out the door.
Yet though these words come at last as a surprise,
I take comfort knowing: Such a feeling never dies.

Nobody else
receives words from my mind’s shelf.
Well, that’s not true completely.
I send tender, romantic poetry
to myself.
